To maintain the Master Level, each test must be recertified every five years. Generally, it is cheaper to repair your car at an auto repair shop than a dealership shop. For the period your car has a warranty, it is definitely cheaper to take it to a dealership as it will be repaired for free. But afterwards, it will be cheaper to shift to an auto repair shop as long as you find a good one.

No ASE Online Test? The ASE offers the automotive service excellence test at 450 centers around the country. While you can register online and download forms and study materials, you cannot take the test via the Internet.
Addressing the Need for Service Techs
AYES (Automotive Youth Educational Systems) is a new approach for hiring and training automotive technicians. It is a national partnership of automobile manufacturers and dealers and education departments in many states around the country.

With this in mind, the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, or NATEF, was established to improve the quality of automotive technician training programs nationwide in high schools and colleges.

A chassis mechanic performs preventative and corrective maintenance on a trailer or intermodal vehicle. Light line or line mechanic is more suited to general mechanical issues like water pumps, alternators, power steering, brakes, suspension systems, and other areas of the vehicle. Light line techs will usually move into heavy line tech as they master the job of repair to vehicles.
The cost of the ASE certification tests is $47 per test plus a single $34 registration fee paid with each order. For example, taking the A1 and A2 exams would cost 2 x $47 + $34 = $128. Although the cost seem pricey, it can more than make up in career growth and additional pay.
What is the easiest ASE test? We put out a survey to over 100 ASE Master Automotive Technicians, asking them to rank the A1-A8 tests in order of easiest to hardest. The results of the survey named a clear winner for “Easiest ASE Test,” and that is the A5 Braking Systems test.
Plus, you can substitute your training for one of the two years of work experience required to become ASE certified. It's often one of the first steps graduates take as they enter the automotive industry.
Here in Canada, ASE certification is not required, but offers another way for a technician to demonstrate their passion and commitment to their craft. Along with being a Red Seal Journeyman Automotive Service Technician, our owner Chris is also an ASE Certified Master Technician.
You can take as many tests as you want in your certification window. If you're going for your recertification, you may take as many recertification tests as you want in a registration window, but ASE caps the cost of your tests at $129.
